Lohn Dere 265 Tractor Engine 17hp Kawasaki No Fc540v185308 Diagram

Hello all.. I've been searching this forum for quite some time.. and I finally needed to make an account to post for help. .. So to skip to the point .. here is some history and specs on the mower..

265 w/ 17hp kawasaki air cooled single . engine code FC540V-CS00 .

Previous owner said it ran great, was a little hard to start sometimes. He DROVE it into the barn last summer. and it has not been touched until a few days ago when we struck a deal and pushed it onto my trailer.

The previous owner is not some stranger off craigslist, its a family member who can actually be trusted.

.. I got it home, fresh fluids all around, new battery. No joy from the motor. cranks over quick and healthy. but no sign of life.

I pulled the plug,, no spark at all.

Removed the engine cowl, checked for engine corrosion and verified coil air gap .012 . nadda.. nothing.

Went through all connections, keyswitch, pto switch, etc. ohmed each to verify connection and functionality.. Everything APPEARS to check out OK.

A call to the previous owner... he had an extra "igniter" that he bought awhile back as a spare. (small 1x1 approx metal square with one tab connection) . I installed the fresh igniter.. again.. nothing.. no spark at all.

In my rush and anticipation to get this thing going I cruised around online and bought a coil that a dealer told me would get me going.. Kawasaki part number 21121-2069

Coil came today and I installed, I cant say it was a TOTAL failure. I still have NO spark from the plug. But I did take a scrap piece of plug wire and strip it to bare wire to test, and I DO get spark from the BARE plug wire to an earth contact while cranking. although it is VERY weak and I have to VERY close to earth, basically touching / scraping. otherwise it will not jump ANY gap.

I came back in and searched online again, then i see the part number (kawasaki) 21121-2059 popping up under searches for coils.. So now I am worried I bought the wrong coil. I looked at a couple parts diagrams and it appears they are the same, they both use the same flywheel and igniter..

So thats my first concern.. Am i wrong with the coil 21121-2069 ? should I have 2059?

The "local" JD dealer was no help at all .. bummer.. acted like it was KFC's secret recipe or something and had no interest in giving information to help me.

I have searched and searched, and tried everything I can think of. Safety switches, kill wires, etc,, all been disco'd and bypassed. with key in the RUN position PTO WILL engine, so I know "electronically" the machine is ready to run. it THINKS it is.

My only other thought Is I hear alot of people getting bad igniters out of the box?.. Either way, I have one of the cheap-o ones ($15) coming tuesday.. I cant keep throwing that much cash at guesses.. If it DOES fix it, even if it only last 1 run, I can now be assured I need to buy the $75 (approx) official unit.

I cant help but think the igniter is not the issue though.. If i am getting any fire at all (be it very weak and straight off bare wire touching ground) wouldnt that mean it is good?

I figured it was either a spark - or no spark situation with the ignition module.

and then the coil would be to blame for a weak spark symptom? then that leads me back to second guessing my coil purchase.

AHHh.. round and round in circles I am going with this thing.

This is my first john deere, first kawasaki power equipment engine.. If someone could just step in and point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated..

I have gone through the kawasaki service manual for this motor and it really did not help much at all..

I am stumped and not sure where to go with this..

Previous owner said if I cant get it going he'd be happy to take it back, he doesnt want a sour deal ruining a relationship. But I really DONT want to take it back, this thing is in AWESOME shape!

thanks to all who made it through that.. :dunno:
